NEXT MEETING Monday 14th September – A History of the Fishhook

After the Summer break with its often-challenging weather, we are back with an ‘Autumn term’ of more enjoyable talks and presentations about both local and more general historic subjects.

Our next meeting is on Monday 14th September and will be held at 2pm in our usual venue, the Oasis Christian Centre on the corner of Plymouth Road near Redditch Bus and Train Stations.

Our speaker will be, yours truly, Anthony Green, Secretary of the Society, and the presentation will explain how the first hooks were made and used and how they evolved from a simple tool carved from bone for catching food into an essential component in major international sport. Of great interest will be the story of how their use spread across the known world and just how Redditch became the centre of the fishing-tackle industry before its eventual sad decline in the locality.

Non-members are always welcome, for a £4 entrance fee, and refreshments are available after the talk for just fifty pence per person.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Kind Regards,

Anthony Green

Secretary, Redditch History Society.
